How to Make Lyonnaise Potatoes

Ever wondered how you could make simple Lyonnaise potatoes? If so, then this recipe is just for you. And it’s so easy it takes less than 10 minutes to prep and cook! Awesome, right?

The Lyonnaise potatoes meal is a great vegetarian dish and very tasty. It originated from France and is named after the French city of Lyon. There are many variations of the dish but the basic ingredients are only two.

How to Make Lyonnaise Potatoes

The main ingredients here will be potatoes and onions, but you can add spices and herbs like coriander,cayenne and black pepper. These will add great flavour to the recipe!

  1. Irish potatoes
  2. Large red onion
  3. Oil / butter
  4. Garlic cloves
  5. Salt


  1. Peel the potatoes, slice them and put them in a saucepan. Add a little salt and bring to boil.
  2. In the meantime chop the onion and garlic cloves.
  3. Remove the potatoes from heat and drain after about 3 minutes of boiling. They should still be firm and not mushy.
  4. Warm oil or butter in a skillet/frying pan and saute the onion and garlic until translucent. You can heat oil and butter together to prevent the butter from burning and to give the dish a richer flavour.
  5. Sprinkle a little salt and any seasoning of your choice then add the potatoes.
  6. Stir lightly and cook on medium heat for about 5 minutes.
  7. Remove from heat and serve.


This simple meal of Lyonnaise potatoes is best served with stir fry making it ideal for vegetarians. The potatoes are good sources of carbohydrates, vitamins B6 & C, potassium, manganese, copper, phosphorous and fiber.

These nutrients help in the functioning of the nervous system and aid in cardiovascular protection mostly due to the presence of vitamin B6.

And since this is a light meal, it is ideal for dinner.


Potatoes and onions should not be stored together because the gases that they each emit could spoil the other!
